Posted by Posted on Wednesday, 13 Sep 2017 08:30 PM

    BY JULIA CAVANAGH

Join us for a bonfire, BYO picnic and Family Folk Music on the Green at Champlain Valley Cohousing in Charlotte, VT on September 23, 2017. Music and picnicking starts at 5:30 p.m. We are delighted to have guitarist and harmonica player Paul Sprawl performing. His music uniquely combines percussive guitar techniques with bottleneck, tapping, harmonica and a baritone voice.

Bring a folding chair, sit at our picnic tables, or spread a picnic blanket while your kiddos play on our sprawling green lawn and pirate ship. Warm yourself at our bonfire and enjoy a crisp Vermont fall evening. This is a carry in, carry out event. We have plenty of free parking.

Champlain Valley Cohousing is located at 27 Common Way in Charlotte VT 05445.

  • Peregrine Falcon Nesting Cliffs Reopened for Hikers

Posted by Posted on Tuesday, 22 Aug 2017 05:24 PM

FROM VT FISH & WILDLIFE PRESS RELEASE

Vermont Fish & Wildlife has reopened the cliffs closed to hiking and access earlier this spring to protect nesting peregrine falcons.

“The young peregrines have fledged, and nesting data suggest Vermont falcons had a good year,” said Vermont Fish & Wildlife’s migratory bird biologist John Buck.  “A final report will be issued later this year.  Peregrine nesting success is partly due to cooperation from hikers and rock climbers who observe a respectful distance from nesting falcons during this critical period.  This success would not be possible without the more than 40 volunteers who monitor nest sites statewide from March to the end of July.”

  • COMMENTARY - Charlottesville and Free Speech

Posted by Posted on Tuesday, 22 Aug 2017 05:16 PM

    BY BILL SCHUBART

The principle of free speech is again being debated in the streets, in op-ed columns, and between opposing ideologies. Although principles are often deemed absolute, their legal application is most often contextual … and therein lies the rub.

The context often cited is that it’s illegal to yell “fire” in a crowded theater unless there’s a fire. It’s also illegal to verbally incite the use of lawless force with intent to do violence and, just recently, to encourage suicide. Pornography has limited protection, but child pornography has none. There’s “diminished protection” for “commercial speech” such as false or misleading advertising.

  • Statement from Gov. Scott on the Ongoing Response to Events in Charlottesville, NC

Posted by Posted on Thursday, 17 Aug 2017 04:40 PM

    FROM PRESS RELEASE

Today Governor Phil Scott made the following statement regarding the events in Charlottesville and the national response that followed. View the video statement here, and read the transcript below.

“This is a very concerning time for our nation, and many Vermonters have asked my thoughts about the events in Virginia, as well as the President's response. Rather than issue another written statement, I wanted to take just a few minutes to respond personally.”

“First, I'd like to offer my condolences to the families of Heather Heyer, the courageous young woman who lost her life, and Virginia Troopers Cullen and Bates who died in a helicopter crash while keeping watch on the rally. Violence is never an acceptable outcome in the exercise of free speech. While it will be our justice system's responsibility to hold people accountable, it's up to all of us, as Americans, to make sure they have not died in vain.
